Folligen products for men are either used alone or with other hair stimulating products such as Emu Oil, minoxidil, Propecia and other DHT inhibitors, and retinoic acid. Folligen is compatible with these products and helps improve hair follicle health, reduce DHT, and calm the scalp irritation is sometimes caused by some products. The Folligen products are based on Dr. Pickart's second generation SRCPs - his first generation inventions produced Tricomin and GraftCyte. Folligen
Lotion, Folligen Cream and Folligen Solution Therapy Spray
Your hair contains an entire
dream,
Folligen Lotion, Folligen Cream and Folligen Solution Therapy Spray
Folligen® is a non-drug product designed by Dr. Loren Pickart to improve scalp and hair follicle health and hair vitality. Folligen is especially useful in helping to reduce scalp irritation caused by other hair growth products such as Rogaine® (minoxidil), Retin-A® (retinoic acid) and Propecia®. Compare Folligen Cream or Folligen Lotion at $21.95 and Folligen Solution Therapy Spray for $36.95 to Tricomin Solution Follicle Therapy Spray® sold by ProCyte for $48.00 and GraftCyte Solution® for $125.00 which are products based on Dr. Pickart's earlier hair health inventions. Click here to compare US patents on Folligen vs GraftCyte® and Tricomin®. All Folligen products contain a high concentration of blue-colored skin remodeling copper-peptide complexes and do not contain any blue dyes or scalp damaging detergents or alcohol. Folligen Solution Therapy Spray uses small amounts of polysorbate 20 and propylene glycol to enhance the uptake of copper-peptide around the hair follicle.
Theories of hair loss and thinning hair have focused on the metabolic actions of testosterone metabolites. However, the ultimate factor in hair loss is damage to the hair follicle caused by the testosterone metabolites. A recent study of 3,000 individuals found no link between baldness and the genes (5-alpha reductase) controlling the the production of testosterone metabolites . (Reference: Elias, Stebbing and Harrap, Genetic analysis of male pattern baldness and the 5-alpha reductase genes, J Invest Dermatol 110: pages 849-853 (1998)). If follicular health is improved or maintained, hair loss can be reversed or minimized. Many men have high testosterone metabolite levels but never suffer hair loss.

Male Hair Regrowth - Our Recommendations
Our recommendations, based on 20 years of successful research on skin and hair and copious feedback from many male customers, are:
1. Start with SRCPs (Skin Remodeling Copper Peptides) such as Folligen Lotion, Folligen Cream, or Folligen Solution Therapy Spray.
SRCPs have both skin repair and hair growth enhancement effects.
The copper-peptide concept of tissue renewal is based on 25 years of research. (click here for Published Research Articles) Dr. Pickart invented the SRCPs that produced Tricomin and GraftCyte while founding at ProCyte Corporation, which sells them. Both GraftCyte for improving the establishment of hair transplants, and Tricomin for stimulating hair growth, have demonstrated efficacy clinical studies.
We recommend using Folligen four to five times a week as a light coating applied before bedtime.
Male customers usually tell us that Folligen:
(1) Markedly reduces hair loss in about three weeks
(2) Improves their scalp health and reduces irritation
(3) Results in a thicker head of hair in about four months
Many of our customers
have reported that the combination of Folligen's SRCPs and emu
oil often produce drastic reductions in hair loss and increased hair growth.
Recently, Dr. Michael Holick (Boston University
Medical Center) reported a clinical study that found emu oil accelerated
skin regeneration and also stimulated hair growth. He wrote -"The hair
follicles were more robust, the skin thickness was remarkably increased...Also,
we discovered in the same test that over 80 percent of hair follicles that
had been 'asleep' were awakened, and began growing hair".
3. For More Hair Growth Add in Minoxidil (2% or 5%)
For more hair stimulation, add in 2% Minoxidil. This can be progressively increased to 5% Minoxidil. Sometimes minoxidil produces scalp irritation. If this happens, stop the minoxidil and use only Folligen until your scalp health is restored. Then reuse the 2% minoxidil and the 5% minoxidil if your scalp remains healthy. Prof. Hedio Uno, one of the world's top scientists on hair growth and who wrote the textbook on Rogaine, found SRCPs and minoxidil work together to produce increased hair growth.
The Method by the Numbers
This procedure works well for many people.
Step 1: Use Folligen Lotion, Cream or Spray to get your scalp in good shape. Apply a thin coating of Folligen Cream, Lotion or Folligen Solution Therapy Spray to the scalp. The Cream is better for the hairline and the Lotion and Spray are easier to work into heavier hair. Folligen is usually applied before bedtime. If desired, you may shampoo the Folligen out in the morning. Then start using 2% minoxidil along with Folligen. If this is not irritating, move up to Folligen and 5% minoxidil.
Apply the minoxidil first and let it dry for about a minute, then apply the Folligen.
Step 2. If your scalp become irritated stop the minoxidil but continue Folligen. When your scalp is OK again, resume the progressive use of minoxidil and start again with 2% and move up to 5%.
After a number of cycles of steps 1 and 2, your skin should adjust and you should be able to use both together.
While this 2-Step System works very well, many of our customers say that Folligen alone has sufficiently solved their hair problems.
3. Addition of Retinoic Acid (useful range 0.01 to 0.05%) gives further hair stimulation but may irritate the scalp.
Retinoic acid (Retin-A) helps produce thicker hair shafts when used with minoxidil. This combination appears to be one of the better current approaches to hair regrowth. The major drawback is an often strong scalp irritation. Folligen, used lightly, can greatly reduce this irritation. Sometimes, the combination of minoxidil and retinoic acid causes breaks in the skin barrier.
4. The addition anti-testosterone supplements or DHT blockers may help further.
DHT (dihydrotestosterone) blockers include the Propecia®, the new drug from Merck and several useful non-drug DHT blockers.
Propecia has been around for some time as Proscar for the treatment of prostate hyperplasia in men and has recently been approved by the FDA for hair growth in men. Merck does not recommend Propecia for women: a one year study of hair growth in 136 post-menopausal women found no significant effect of Propecia on hair growth.
Non-drug DHT Blockers include saw palmetto oil, pygeum and nettle root extract, the isoflavones genistein and daidzien, and ginkgo biloba.
Saw palmetto has been used for over 400 years as a herbal treatment for enuresis, nocturia, atrophy of the testes, impotence, inflammation of the prostate, and as a mild aphrodisiac for men. Women used the berries to treat infertility, painful periods and problems with lactation.
Extracts of two plants, pygeum bark (Pygeum africanum) and nettle root (Urtica dioica) are widely used for the treatment of prostate hyperplasia.
Isoflavonoids, such as genistein and daidzein are weak estrogens and may lessen the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. Several studies have found a protective effect of isoflavones against the development of cancer. The Chinese report that daidzien exhibits hair growth and hair color promoting activity. Some Folligen users have reported good hair regrowth when combined with oral intake of bioflavinoids.
Ginkgo biloba is a popular herb used world wide to improve cerebral blood flow and general blood circulation. It was recently reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. It has been reported to inhibit 5-alpha reductase activity.
Cautions:
Bleached, or very blond hair may pick up a green tint if Folligen is in contact with the hair. Try to keep the products on the scalp. However, many men and women with blond hair report excellent results with the Folligen products. This is similar to the greenish-tint that may occur after spending time in swimming pools. The blue color can be removed with a solution of 1 part of lemon juice and 4 parts of water.
If the coloring is a problem, then use Folligen for Blondes which has no blue color.
Lowering Testosterone in Men Can Benefit Hair Growth
Many hair growth
therapies focus on either reducing testosterone or DHT effects in the body.
Many men worry about the potential effects of of reducing testosterone
effects. There is actually very little to worry over.

An excellent book on testosterone and
behavior is James McBride Dabbs "Heroes, Rogues, and Lovers: Testosterone
and Behavior" ( McGraw Hill, 2000).
The above data is from Hill's studies.
In modern advanced cultures, somewhat lower testosterone appear to be of great benefit. Men with highest testosterone levels have lower incomes, lower social status, more unstable relationships, and more difficulty in life. For our ancestors 20,000 years ago, individual strength and aggression were critical to survival. But obtaining rewards in modern cultures usually require patience, cunning, and interpersonal skills.
The use of anti-androgens and
DHT blockers may improve male health. Testosterone has often been suspected
as a cause of the increased heart disease in men. Studies of men who were
castrated in the 1920's in the USA found that they lived an average of
13.6 years longer than comparable men. In contrast, smoking one pack of
cigarettes daily reduces one's life span by an average of 4.9 years. (Hamilton
& Mesler 1969)

A tube of Folligen, used about 4 times per week, should last 45 to 60 days depending on the size of application area. In our clinical studies, we apply a very light coating (approximately 10 milligrams per square centimeter) to the skin which is then further rubbed into the skin.
Background Information
Folligen® aids hair health by helping the scalp tissue repair itself (such as with seborrheic dermatitis or damage from harsh chemicals, sunburn, and hair dryers). Clinical tests of Folligen's key ingredients have demonstrated that the primary effect is to help the skin improve it's barrier function.

Skin Biology - Proctor products work
for some people. But you have to do some experimenting to find what works
best for yourself.
G.D., Texas
I first found out about your company because I saw a product at the drug store that was a skin cream that contained copper. I found this concept, using copper for skin, intriguing. So I went on the internet and saw your company coming up again and again, neither overly praising nor denigrating you. I pulled up your website, or should I say one section, And I was overblown. I love the web site but what I really like is you give the competition equal, objective, time and space. I did not order right away because one I did not know what to order, and it is a little expensive to just experiment with. Number two, I had no obvious reason to use the products.
About three or four months ago I went through a period of time with severe stress from work. Between the stress, the pulling of my own hair, and the change in my diet I started losing hair in great amounts. After great trepidation I decided to order the Folligen sample pack with Minoxidil. Let me tell you something, I am an Actor/Director who lives part time in Los Angeles, I truly appreciate anyone or anything that cares more for and spends more on quality than packaging. Not to say I don't like your style, even though it would be nice to have instructions on the actual product, in fact I do like the simplicity of it. But I will tell you, after using your products for a couple of months, I appreciate not having to worry about what kind of product you are going to get each time you order. The quality, from my limited experience, is unparalleled, and it's not because suddenly I have all this hair or after a couple of weeks. I have no more wrinkles, because that is not the truth. What is the truth is my scalp after a couple of days felt remarkably better, it hurt because I was pulling at my hair, my hair felt great and my hair felt more stable in the scalp.
I just want you to know how much someone like me appreciates a classy and honest company as yourselves... But , please stay as you are, because when I buy your products (in the future), I would like to get them as they exist now not in some compromised form. Keep up the remarkable work.

I wanted to ask you if adding Azelex (20% azelic acid) to my hair growth regime of Folligen, Retin-A .025%, Dilantin, and minoxidil 2%- is there any complication or rather conflict with the effects of Folligen?
Thank you again for the great products and the technical advice. So far it's been a month and a half and people that I run in to are making remarks about my hair growth. I can only imagine what will result after a year of applying my regimen.

Skin Biology comment
- It looks like you may have the right formula. However, if the Retin-A
and azelex acid cause scalp irritation, then reduce their use until the
Folligen heals up your scalp. Then add them back into your formula again.

Skin Biology response
- Polysorbate 80 acts as a penetrating agent and this may explain the effect.
We have heard of people getting good hair growth by first using 50% DMSO/water
- which is also a penetrating agent - on their head then applying Folligen.

I think Folligen is also a very safe product compared to the other products marketed for hair. I'm going to be a lifetime Folligen user.

I received my Folligen tubes. It is very hard for me to apply it at my scalp since I still have hair. I mixed 1/3 part of your lotion with 2/3 parts of purified water and pour in old rogaine bottles. Any drawbacks or loss of chemical properties with this?
I also received your skin cream. WOW! I can't believe my little wrinkles are disappearing in just two weeks! I hope to see good results on my scalp (hoping not to wait too much). Please keep up the good work on your products.

answer: We have a number of reports of good results after mixing Folligen
with water.
I used your product Folligen from July, 1994 through February 1996 and experienced no hair loss in that period of time. I ran out of Folligen in February, and by August, I had a bald spot on the front right-hand side of my head along the part. My hairline was also receding along the left side.
I have now used
Folligen Lotion since August 1996 and my hairline has stopped receding
on both sides. Though I do have a little thinning, the hair has grown back
in what was the bald spot on the left side. I apply a layer of Folligen
to my scalp once a day, after I shower. I have not been losing hair, so
I think it is working.

However, I would be grateful if you could spend a few minutes to answer a few of my questions: Which would be more effective, Folligen® cream or Folligen® lotion? Are the ingredients more concentrated in the cream?
Skin Biology answer: Some people prefer the cream and some the lotion. From a skin repair point-of-view, the two versions are about equal. To increase fluidity, the lotion has fewer "stiffening agents" than the cream.
Would it be possible to mix Folligen® (2 parts) with ethyl alcohol (1 part) to enhance absorption and "flowing" to the scalp?
Skin Biology answer: Many people are mixing Folligen® with minoxidil - which is in alcohol - and reporting good results. We are working on a version of Folligen® in an ethyl alcohol solution.

Now I use Folligen® along with minoxidil, I've had less inflammation, itching, and flaking. I've tried and given up on many other products that are supposed to improve the health of the scalp's skin, but Folligen® is the only one I've ended up sticking with.
