The Skin Renewal Cycle and Hair Follicles

Folligen Enhances the Effects of Minoxidil

Folligen SRCPs enhance the effects of Minoxidil by benefiting both hair growth and follicle size. Professor Hideo Uno (who wrote UpJohn's textbook for physicians when Rogaine first was marketed) has found that SRCPs convert thin, vellus hairs into thick, terminal hairs. (Uno and Kurata 1993, Uno, Packard, Patt 1996). Numerous studies have found such copper-peptides to increase hair follicle size. SRCPs and Hair Growth

SRCPs have both skin repair and hair growth enhancement effects. Examples of this are Folligen (from Skin Biology) and Tricomin and GraftCyte (from ProCyte Corporation).

The skin of the mouse to the left was shaved, then treated in three spots with Folligen. The result is a much more rapid hair growth (the three circular patches of hair) in the three spots treated with Folligen. While human hair growth will not respond nearly as dramatically as in mice, skin health and hair follicle function are closely interrelated. New skin appears to arise from the hair follicle. As a person ages, our hair follicles get smaller, producing thinner hair shafts. The blood circulation system that supplies nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicle send fewer blood vessels to the hair follicle, thus inhibiting the vital flow of nutrients to the hair follicle. Copper-Peptides complexes improve skin health and a more healthy skin increases the blood vessel network to the hair follicles resulting in larger follicles that grow hair faster with thicker hair shafts.

In the microscopic images to the left, the magnifications are identical. The top photo is mouse skin untreated with SRCPs. The bottom photo is mouse skin treated with SRCPs. Note the larger hair follicles (the elongated purple columns) in the lower photo, the increased content of subcutaneous fat in the skin (the white material in the center of the skin), and the increased thickness of the skin. When we are young, we have a layer of fat under the skin (part of "baby fat") which is greatly reduced as we age. Hair researchers have noted the accumulation of this fat around healthy follicles that are vigorously growing hair, and its relative lack in around dormant follicles, and have postulated that these cells serve a supportive function for the hair follicle. In animal studies, copper peptides have reduced or stopped the hair loss associated with chemotherapy for cancer. It must be emphasized that effects in in humans on hair follicle health are not as dramatic.

Dr. Pickart invented the SRCP technology that produced Tricomin and GraftCyte while at ProCyte Corporation, which sells the latter two products. Both GraftCyte for improving the establishment of hair transplants, and Tricomin for stimulating hair growth, have demonstrated efficacy in clinical studies.

Is Copper Better Than Propecia® for Blocking DHT Production?

Recent research indicates that the DHT that harms hair follicles comes from the the skin's sebocytes and sweat glands (sebaceous glands). (Chen et al 1996)  5 alpha-Reductase, the enzyme system that converts testosterone into DHT occurs in two enzyme forms. The type 1 represents the 'cutaneous type'; it is located primarily in the skin's sebocytes but also in epidermal and follicular keratinocytes, dermal papilla cells and sweat glands as well as in fibroblasts. The type 2 is located mainly in the seminal vesicles, prostate and in the inner root sheath of the hair follicle.

Propecia® (Finasteride), which has a higher affinity for the type 2 form, is best suited for for controlling prostate enlargement. It also must be administered by pills that spread the drug throughout the body.

Copper ion in the skin is more effective in inhibiting the type 1 form which is primarily producing the DHT that damages follicles and can be administered locally to the skin. Sugimoto et al (Sugimito 1995) found that copper ion is a potent inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase, inhibiting both types of 5-alpha reductase (both type 1 and type 2) that produce DHT and is the only metal to do so. Copper ion inhibits (50% reduction in activity) type 1 alpha reductase at 1.9 micromolar (0.12 micrograms copper ion per milliliter) and type 2 alpha reductase at 19.2 microM (1.2 micrograms copper ion per milliliter). No other metal has these effects.

The application of SRCPs may provide sufficient copper ion into the hair follicle area to block DHT production in the scalp. Metabolically active copper ion (that is, copper ion free to block 5-alpha reductase) in the human body exists at about 1 microgram per milliliter in the blood and less in the skin. While the uptake of ionic copper from Copper-Peptides applied to the scalp is very low, human experiments by Professor John Sorenson (University of Arkansas) have found that they can raise copper ion levels in the skin to the effective level of 1 microgram per milliliter.

Calming Actions of Folligen on an Irritated Scalp

Folligen often calms irritated scalp tissue that has been irritated with other hair growth stimulator such as minoxidil or retinoic acid. When using Folligen for scalp calming, start with very light applications of Folligen. On a very irritated scalp, even Folligen can cause a brief stinging, but as your scalp repairs itself, it will become more protective and less sensitive to irritation by minoxidil, retinoic acid, or other items.

Can Folligen Cause Scalp Irritation?

We receive very few reports of scalp irritation. But because any person can have a specific allergy to some ingredient, we recommend starting slowly. Published studies on the SRCPs in Folligen found them to have anti-inflammatory properties on human skin.

Occasionally, we have been told of reports of scalp irritation by Folligen that are posted on Internet chat sites. Such reports are very periodic and seem to arise in batches when the time other companies are preparing to mass market competing types of copper peptides. About 18 months ago, there was such a batch of postings of irritation by Folligen but not one complaint had been received by Skin Biology. The net effect of these postings was a significant and lasting increase in Folligen sales. Since more mass marketing campaigns are starting, we expect more such postings.

Advantages of Folligen Over Other Copper-Peptides

Natural Multiple Stimulators - Folligen is an advanced version of earlier work on SRCPs and hair follicle regeneration. See comparing copper peptides and copper peptide regeneration. Research on skin and hair follicle renewal indicates that optimal regeneration is obtained only when there are multiple signals for renewal. Folligen contains copper ion plus a mixture of numerous different peptides fragments that are generated by natural proteolytic enzymes (as happens after follicle or scalp damage). This produces numerous SRCPs in a more natural manner to assist the hair's natural regenerative processes.

Rebuilds Protective Acid Mantle - Folligen rebuilds the protective acid mantle of the scalp that shampoos and conditioners remove. The acid mantle is the combination of sebum (oils) and perspiration, on the skin's surface that protects the skin and renders the skin less vulnerable to damage and attack by environmental factors such as sun and wind and less prone to dehydration. The mantle also has strong anti-oxidant properties and is itself oxidized to protect the skin from oxidation. Sebum is naturally white but air oxidation turns it black (this is why "whitehead comedos" turn into "blackhead comedos").

Normal skin and scalp pH is somewhat acid and in the range of 4.2. to 5.6. It varies from one part of the body to another and, in general, the pH of a man's skin is lower (more acid) than that of a woman's. The acid mantle inhibits the growth of foreign bacteria and fungi and the skin remains healthier, and has fewer blemishes. Acne, allergies and other skin problems become more severe when the skin become more alkaline.

Folligen adjusts the scalp pH into the acid range of optimal scalp health at about pH 5.0. Folligen also contains high levels of lipids such as squalane, cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate and stearic acid that closely resembles the fats of the acid mantle. Furthermore, Folligen contains antioxidants such as allantoin, aloe, vitamin E and retinol to aid the mantles protective anti-oxidant properties.

In this manner, Folligen improves scalp health and aids hair growth. Folligen works well with Minoxidil or the Minoxidil and Retinoic Acid combination.

Safety of Folligen - Folligen has passed numerous safety tests at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and at the Shanghai Medical University. Folligen has been found to be non-irritating and safe.  Folligen (1) was non-irritating by the human patch test (5 days of heavy covering of product on the skin), (2) was non-irritating on tape-stripped (injured) human skin, (3) passed the Ames (bacterial) test for carcinogenicity, (4) passed the guinea pig acute skin irritation test and was classified as a non-irritant, (5) passed the human induced-allergy test and classified as a non-allergen, (6) was non-comedogenic in humans and (7) was found have no evidence of oral toxicity in mice.

How Long Will Folligen Last?

A tube of Folligen Cream or Lotion, used 4 times per week, should last about 45 days depending on the size of application area. In our clinical studies, we apply a very light coating (approximately 10 milligrams per square centimeter) to the skin which is then further rubbed into the skin. Folligen Therapy Spray should last 2 to 3 months.

Hi, I'm a 19 year old female who has been suffering from hair loss due to stress. It started about 8 months ago, when I was dealing with some stressful things at home, college and other family problems. I started to notice a little thinning around my edges, but figured it was no big deal. Then I could see my hair getting thinner and thinner, as the months went on.

By the fifth month, the hair started coming out in clumps. I would literally get handfuls of hair when I touched, or even combed it! (Washing just made it worse!) It got so bad to the point where my edges were practically bald, and then I knew that I had to find something to try and reverse the shedding, and grow my edges back.

So I purchased a trial sized bottle of Folligen Spray to try, since by then I figured I had nothing to lose. I also purchased some Emu Oil to go with it. I started using it 4x a week, and after 3 weeks of using the Folligen Spray and Emu Oil on my edges, I began to notice hairs growing in thick all around the hairline!!

I have now been using Folligen Spray and Emu Oil together for 1 month and a week now, and my hairline is almost back to where it was before the stress took over! Dear Dr. Pickart,
I have now been using your products for about three weeks and would like to report my experience:

Folligen - I have a history of hair falling out for the last few years, therefore, have tried every conceivable product from dermatologists' sprays, liquids, lotions, shampoos, conditioners to ending up with my own choice of CVS 5% minoxidil. I have spent thousands of dollars with the MDs' products (will not mention names but all are very well known) and they have not helped.

In the last 3 months, the 5% minoxidil was not working and started caused irritation and flaky scalp even though I used it every other day 2x/day. I put drops directly on scalp and rub in with Q-tip - very effective method by the way because it also massages the scalp.

I counted the hair that fell out every morning and under magnification saw the bulb attached to the strands and was losing between 80-100 hairs every day. My response was to find something better and through extensive research I found your products not only for hair but for skin.

For about three weeks I have been using a dilution of 50% Folligen Spray/50% purified water which I apply with a bottle dropper on parted hair at top of my head and rub in with Q-tip. I started slowly and built up to it over a week to10 days which allowed me to stop using minoxidil at night.

Result: my hair has stopped falling out and for days at a time no hair at all has fallen out. And no more flaking scalp or irritation and dryness. My regimen: 5% minoxidil full strength in am @16 drops and Folligen 50% dilution in am @/16 drops.

I have very light blonde hair chemically processed every 2 months. I have not had any color from the Folligen stain my hair at all and I use it every night. I will keep you informed about my progress...

I do not have before and after pictures, but I will describe what I have noticed. I have been applying Emu Oil to my scalp for about a month and Folligen Spray followed by Emu Oil for Hair for the last 2 weeks and I have noticed that my hair is growing much faster than before. I normally only need a hair cut every 6 or 7 weeks, and now it is 4 weeks since my last hair cut and I can see I will need one soon. I also noticed short hairs, which could mean that there is new growth. All that is obviously due to the CPs (I also use the Folligen Shampoo) and maybe the Emu Oil.

I have been using the Folligen Cream and the Shampoo and Conditioner for about 2 weeks with no problems. With the Cream, I put an amount about the size of a plump shelled peanut in the palm of my hand. I dab some on the fingers of my other hand and massage the scalp area along the hairline, trying to keep most of it on the scalp. I continue doing this on all areas of my head where my hair is getting thin. Most of these areas are on the crown. That one small amount of cream is enough to do all the areas I am treating. You know how you can take 4 fingers on a hand and comb your hair back from your face. I do something like that, except I don't run my fingers all the way out into the hair. I dab a little cream on the fingers and then part the hair with those fingers and massage the scalp with the cream. I was concerned I would have to wash my hair in the mornings, but so far I only have to wash it about every third day.

This isn't about Folligen per se, but I noticed the other day that my hairline has significantly filled in since using CP Serum on my face. Some of the product gets on the receding hairline area of my face and I think that is what is making it fill in. I was very excited! I have just placed an order for some Folligen Lotion to try it out on my whole scalp...It's funny because the Copper products [SRCPs] CP Serum in my case, have 'fixed' things I wasn't even trying to fix! I have used several of your products over the past 4 yrs. with great success. I will be 47 yrs old next month. I don't look my age. I have been told I look 35 yrs old. Cautions and Getting Rid of Any Green

Blond hair may pick up a green tint if Folligen is in contact with the hair. Try to keep the products on the scalp. However, many men and women with blond hair report excellent results with the Folligen products. This is similar to the greenish-tint that may occur after spending time in swimming pools.

Here's a heads up...

There are several of us with processed hair that tends to pick up a green tint even from the shampoo.

During my research to learn what chelates metals and what products swimmers are using that are producing excellent results, I happened across some very interesting information. I found that swimmers' hair gets a green tint (here it comes) not because of the copper alone but because the chlorine in the water opens the hair cuticle and the copper can then easily bind to the cuticle giving it a greenish tint and in fact happens even if you are not blonde although it is less noticeable. When I researched amongst swimmers, the best products that produced results hands down, shampoos with Vitamin C to chelate the metals from the hair were the winners. There were other “chemicals” for chelating but Vitamin C was rising to the forefront, great results and easily attainable.

With that said, a few of us, loving Folligen and not willing to give it up but wanting to get rid of the green, proceeded with rinsing our hair with lemon juice diluted in water (about 1 part lemon juice to 3 parts water). Without exception, whether the hair was rinsed pre-shampoo or after shampoo with the lemon water, all traces of green tint were removed within a few minutes of applying the lemon water.

That has made a lot of us Folligen lovers very, very happy indeed!

Studies have found that ionic zinc can inhibit 5-alpha reductase (type I) but zinc has no effect on type II reductase. Some studies have found that the combination of B6, zinc salts and azelaic acid, even at low concentrations, caused a 90% inhibition of 5-alpha reductase activity - but this is still not hair growth. In some persons zinc salts are often used in disorders related to excess DHT such as acne and prostrate hyperplasia. The topical application of zinc has shown to reduce sebum production and acne. Some people suffering from acne have been found to have zinc deficiencies in their skin, despite of the fact that they have normal levels within their bloodstream.

The effects of topical zinc on hair growth may be due to skin irritation actions. In the 1970's, a number of severe skin irritants, such as nitrobenzene derivatives, were investigated for hair growth properties. While they initially stimulated hair growth, they ultimately produced unacceptable scalp damage and irritation and could not be continued for use.

Zinc salts can inhibit the action of the immune system macrophages on the skin. Since the macrophages are key cell responsible for skin repair, excessive use of zinc salts on the skin could inhibit skin and hair follicle repair. Mulhern et al 1986 reported that excessive dietary zinc in mice reduced plasma copper and induced alopecia. Lansdown 1991 (Westminster Medical School, Department of Comparative Biology, London, UK) examined the dermal irritancy of six zinc compounds was examined in three animal models. In open patch tests involving five daily applications, zinc chloride (1% aqueous solution) was severely irritant in rabbit, guinea-pig and mouse tests, inducing epidermal hyperplasia and ulceration; aqueous zinc acetate (20%) was slightly less irritant. Zinc oxide (20% suspension dilute Tween 80), zinc sulphate (1% aqueous solution) and zinc pyrithione (20% suspension) were not overtly irritant, but induced a marginal epidermal hyperplasia and increased hair growth. Thus, hair growth effects observed with zinc may be secondary to dermal irritation. (Lansdown AB, Interspecies variations in response to topical application of selected zinc compounds, Food Chem Toxicol 1991 Jan; 29 (1): 57-64)

Like zinc, topical cortisone has been used to promote hair growth and is often reasonable effective in persons with inflammatory scalp conditions. But cortisone stops skin repair and, if used for an extended period, ultimately thins the skin, damages hair follicles, and causes hair loss.

After many years of using eye makeup and eye makeup remover I've noticed that my lashes are no longer as thick as they once were.
